About SASSA War Veterans Grant

Former soldiers who fought in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953) who are unable to support themselves can apply for a war veteran’s grant.

How do you know if you qualify for SASSA War Veterans Grant?

You must:

  • You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident
  • live in South Africa
  • Age 60 or older or have a disability
  • A veteran of the Second World War or the Korean War
  • No other social grant for yourself
  • Not be placed in a state institution
  • You cannot earn more than R86280 if you’re single or R172 560 if you’re married
  • If you are single, you cannot have assets worth more than R 1227 600, and if you are married, you cannot have assets worth more than R 2 455 200.

Note: For the purpose of the means test, the value of the home that you or your spouse own is not taken into account.

How much will you get from SASSA War Veterans Grant?

You will get R 1 910 per month.

How will you be paid for the SASSA War Veterans Grant?

A grant will be paid to you by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in one of the following ways:

  • On a particular day, cash will be available at a particular pay point
  • The bank may charge you a fee for electronic deposits into your bank or Postbank account.
  • The institution administering the grant, such as a welfare organization.

Note: If you cannot collect the grant yourself, you can appoint someone to do so for you, or you can give someone power of attorney to collect it for you.

When may your SASSA War Veterans Grant be reviewed?

SASSA can decide if your grant needs to be reviewed. You will be judged based on the amount of income you declared when you applied for the grant. You will be notified three months in advance of the date on which the review will take place or when the life certificate (a document proving that you are still alive) is due. The SASSA requires you to fill out a life certificate each year if your money comes from a bank, institution, or procurator.

When may your SASSA War Veterans Grant be suspended?

The following may result in your grant being suspended:

  • when your circumstances change
  • the outcome of a review
  • The grant review will not be successful if you do not cooperate
  • You commit fraud or misrepresent yourself when you commit fraud or misrepresentation
  • When your grant was approved, there was a mistake.

When will your SASSA War Veterans Grant lapse?

The grant will lapse in the case of:

  • death
  • admission to a state institution
  • If the grant has not been claimed for three consecutive months
  • when you are absent from the country.

Note: If you are admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to care for you, your social grant is reduced by 25%. Your admission to that institution will begin in the fourth month following your admission. You receive your reduced grant again after being discharged from the institution.

What you should do

  1. The following documents should be brought to the SASSA office closest to your home:
    • A 13-digit barcoded identity document (ID). If you don’t have an ID:
      • SASSA officials must not be present when you complete an affidavit on a standard SASSA format.
      • A sworn statement signed by a reputable person (such as a councillor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion, or school principal) must be presented.
      • You must show proof that you have applied for an at the Department of Home Affairs.
      • The Department of Home Affairs’ temporary ID (if applicable)
    • Your war service certificate is proof of your service during the war.
    • You must have a medical assessment or report stating that you are unable to work if you are under 60.
    • Proof of your marital status. If:
      • The affidavit stating that you are single
      • The marriage certificate and the identity document of your spouse prove you are married
      • you are divorced, your divorce order
      • A death certificate for your spouse shows that he or she has passed away.
      • You or your spouse’s payslips if you are employed.
      • A blue book from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or a discharge certificate from your previous employer if you are unemployed.
      • Detailed bank statements for the last three months if you have a bank account.
      • In the case of investments, information about the interest and dividends you receive.

Applicants who are too old or ill to travel to the office can have a family member or friend apply on their behalf. Please provide a letter from you and/or a doctor’s note explaining your inability to visit the office.

  1. The SASSA officer must be present while you complete the application form (note that only you as the applicant or a SASSA official may complete the form).
  2. You will be given a receipt. Keep it as proof that you applied.
  3. SASSA officers will give you a date when you need to come back and what you need to bring if you want to enroll for cash payments.

What if your application is not approved?

  1. Your application will be rejected if SASSA does not approve it. SASSA will inform you why in writing.
  2. An appeal can be made to the Minister of Social Development at the national office of the Department of Social Development if you disagree with the decision. If you are notified that your application was not approved, you must appeal within 90 days.

How long does SASSA War Veterans Grant take

  • You may have to wait up to three months for your application to be processed.
  • Your grant will be paid from the day you submit your application if it is approved.

How much does SASSA War Veterans Grant cost
